Arrival In the Village
Driving past farms and greenery for a couple of hours, the scenery switches from magnificent karst mountains to sinuously sloping verdant hills and starts to ascend quite dramatically, arriving riverside at Longsheng County, home of Zhuang, Yao, Miao and Dong minority groups. Take a local mini bus farther up the hills and arrive in Ping An village. One gets immediately immersed in local culture: the first part of the hike towards Longji and Ping An villages is lined with locals selling artisan handicrafts. Unlike the aggressive market vendors in large cities of China, the approach here is friendly and gentle. Our hostess from Li-An Lodge greets guests at the village entrance, with optional porters to help carry belongings up to the hotel, enabling one to absorb the beauty of the rice terraces, the elegant wooden structures and the vibrant village life. For elderly or disabled travelers, a sedan chair can be arranged. There are no cars or roads in this lovely village, only stone footpaths to lead people from one place to another at a leisurely pace.
